 WP13 - Objectives

Creation of links among the existing laboratories, and checklist on available equipment. Definition of exchange rules among existing laboratories. Definition of a common experiments plan among different laboratories, focusing on aspects particularly relevant to e-Photon/ONe.

 WP13 - Activities

This workpackage will rely on a task force established by the Integrating Activities Board (IA-B) of the JPA Committee. The first step will be an inventory of existing lab infrastructures at participants' premises, with a checklist of meaningful available and missing equipment. The second task will be the definition of procedures to achieve some degree of integration among these existing laboratories. Among others, the possibilities are those of establishing research exchanges dedicated to experimental activities, dedication of a portion of time and space to host in each lab external e-Photon/ONe researchers, and exploitation of Internet technologies to establish tele-experiments without requiring researcher mobility. In particular, it is foreseen that selected partners, owning large and well-equipped experimental facilities, commit to setting aside a fixed amount of time for use of the resources by other e-Photon/ONe members. This would be in excess and beyond whatever lab usage was being done by the owning partner to carry out its own share of NoE-related research. This could be exemplified as follows: availability of at least one optical table and of all T&M equipment including a high speed BER tester and sampling oscilloscope for one month per year: use of a clean room for three weeks every year, etc.

The selection of which partners participate in this sharing program, the management of the schedule and the assignment of the resources, will be one of the tasks of this WP. Access would be granted based on affinity to research carried out by the owning group and on the fact that this research is part of a NoE JP. However, if there happened to be no such match, the facility would nonetheless be granted to any NoE partner requesting it on a first-come first-served basis.

The third task, which will run in parallel with the previous two, is the definition of an experiments plan of common interest among several laboratories. This plan would encompass cooperative and integrated experimental activities whereby the complementarity of the infrastructures that can be found in different labs wold allow to look at the same problem from different viewpoints. For instance, a program of experimentation on a specific modulation format that tests it on different testbeds emulating different system scenarios, and so on. In the following we indicate some possible experimental activities:

  1. optical access solutions using coarse WDM feeders
  2. time-resolved measurements of SOAs
  3. subsystems fo r optical packet switched networks
  4. phase characterisation of pulse sources for advanced modulation forma ts

 Resources and Laboratories

WP13 maintains an inventory of laboratories, optical resources and devices available to different partners, members of ePhoton/One. These facilities are available to all partners for their work and their contact details are given in the WP13 section inside the Intranet .
