e-Photon/ONe Virtual Departments
The Virtual Departments (VDs) have the goal to coordinate the implementation of the NoE activities on the specific disciplines. Partner researchers of e-Photon/ONe will have a primary affiliation to one VD. Note that these disciplines are not necessarily orthogonal among them; for example, transmission issues are common to core, metro, access and home networks. In some sense, our VDs are organised in a matrix structure, with VD1, VD2 and VD3 in one dimension, and VD4 and VD5 in the other dimension. This is quite similar to the organisation of departments in a university, where e.g. the math and physics departments group basic competencies that are transversal to e.g. electronics and mechanics departments.
Five VDs have been identified:
- VD1 - Core Networks: Technologies, Architectures, and Protocols
- VD2 - Metro and Access Networks: Technologies, Architectures, and Protocols
- VD3 - Home Networks and Other Short-Reach Networks
- VD4 - Optical Switching Systems
- VD5 - Transmission Techniques for Broadband Networks
